On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers then deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth crashed into a field near
Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks.
The attacks have greatly increased attention to national security in the United States. This has had huge implications for United States national and international politics.
Important Facts about 9/11
The attacks killed 2,996 people directly. Another three have since died of causes related to smoke inhalation.
September 11 is now remembered as Patriot Day in the US in memory of those killed
It took firefighters 100 days to put out all the fires ignited by the 9/11 attacks in New York.
The cost of cleaning up the 1.8 million tons of debris after 9/11 is estimated as $750million.
The phrase ‘Ground zero’, used for the site of the World Trade Centre, was originally used to refer to the site of the atomic bomb that exploded over Hiroshima in 1945.

Field trip to Boston to walk the Freedom trail where we will walk through downtown Boston visit Boston Common, Gravesites of famous Bostonians including Paul Revere, Sam Adams, and Mother Goose, Quincy Market & Faneuil Hall, Old Ironsides and Bunker HIll.
