In preparation for your studies of U.S. History you will read one of the following books during summer vacation. Be sure you choose the correct book from the list if you are going into the 9th grade choose books that are listed as U.S. I books, all 10th & 12th grade students will choose a book listed as U.S. II. All honors students in grades 9, 10, & 12 will also read two additional books during the year from the list or another approved book by the teacher. Any books over the summer can be approved by Mr. Metivier at metivierm@worcesterschools.net
Assignment based on the book
- Write a one page summary of the main ideas that are brought out in the book.
- Choose 10 quotes from the book that will help you to learn about the time period that the book is written in and explain how the quotes tell you about the time period and the overall meaning of the story.
- What do you believe is the author’s purpose for writing the book? (one paragraph)
- Rate this book: Good, bad, or indifferent explain your answer. (one paragraph)
You will also need to be prepared to discuss your book in class possibly in literary circles or short presentations depending on your teacher, who may also ask for a more formal assignment based on the book at the beginning of the semester. This assignment is worth 10% of your first quarter grade.
