Dear Worcester Public Schools Caregivers, Staff, and Community Partners:

Following the recent presidential election, Worcester Public Schools (WPS) has received questions about our educational policies on immigration status of youth and families, and opinionated statements educators may make during the work day.

WPS is dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment where every child can thrive academically and emotionally. The district strategic plan, "Our Promise to the Future," aligned with our "Vision of a Learner," guides our efforts to support academic and emotional growth for all scholars. Moreover, the Massachusetts state standards provide a clear roadmap of skills for children to learn at each grade level, and we are committed to the implementation of these skills.

We have reminded staff that political views are not to be brought into the classroom. Teachers are tasked with instructing on state standards using critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and problem solving. Civic engagement is included in our curriculum and should be taught from an unbiased perspective. Public schools exist to educate all children who walk through our doors.

We are reviewing current policies and procedures that may be impacted by the election and will propose any necessary revisions for clarification to the Worcester School Committee.

Elections offer opportunities for change and reflection, and our students observe how we embody these values. Let’s continue working together to make WPS a national model of excellence, inclusiveness and engagement.

Please reach out to your school principal or district office if you have questions.

From here, anywhere…together!

Sincerely,
Rachel H. Monarrez, PhD
Superintendent
